In short
Cards of Yore is a computerised card game meant for all players. It features fast-paced strategic gameplay with a greater focus on the childhood joy of collecting, trading and playing cards. With original game modes, guilds, player hosted tournaments, accessibility, and various other features, it’s a CCG like no other.
Video displays core gameplay. Written in clear & dull, this is what’s going on: Use Resource cards and harvesting Flora to gain Essences, spending those essences to play the other cards. Fauna, character and construct cards attack automatically each turn, Flora harvest automatically when their growth timer hits zero, and merely retaliate when attacked. Having an attacking card with clear line of sight to your opponent lets them attack directly, and as per tradition the game ends when your opponent’s health hits zero.
Nothing too difficult, but just in case it still confuses you? Subscribe to our newsletter and receive the URL for the introduction to the game! Cross-platform multiplayer and customisation of player decks are currently reserved to our supporters. Thank you for helping our dream enter reality.

So what happens during a game of Cards of Yore?
The first thing you do in Cards of Yore is you both play your Biome card. You’ll find them placed to the right of your field, which is the half of the board closest to you. Your field is made up of 12 card placements, organised in 4 columns and 3 rows, and facing your opponent and their identical field.
Then it’s time to draw a hand of five cards for your pre-game phase: the optional discard. Once per match only.
Here you can, if you wish, remove cards from your hand and discard them. At the end of your turn you will draw the same number of cards.
For the rest of the game take turns playing cards. Play Resource cards to gain essence, drawing a card and discarding a card with each Resource played. You can play as many Resource cards per turn as you like, often resulting in hand sizes dwindling rapidly allowing for both run-and-gun styles and diverse strategies.
Use Flora and Fauna to play the game, your Fauna attack automatically at the start of your turn, while flora only retaliate against their attackers. An attacking card will normally target the first card directly in front of it.
Flora also grow and harvest, when their growth counter reaches zero turns they will harvest, triggering their effect.
You will draw a card at the start of each turn, and if both players consecutively played down to less than two cards in their hand, both of you draw an additional three cards. Little tip, don’t worry about throwing away good cards if they’re currently bad!
The goal is to reduce the opponent to zero health from 15. Lastly, remember to check your card’s stats and abilities carefully, and always keep an eye on your health and how many cards are still in your deck! They go faster than you’d expect.
NOTE: As in most Collectible Card Games, when your deck is empty you’ll take damage each turn. Adjust your deck size to your play style for maximized comfort.
Cards of Yore’s Lore
Origin of the game…
Created by a gentle and nomadic race called Alkrhin, the cards started as a way to teach their fawn about their home.
The Alkrhin as a whole hold the belief that to settle is to destroy, while they look at migrating animals and see a force of rejuvenation and balance in the world. Following this example the Alkrhin have been nomadic for generations beyond memory now, travelling the world in small groups using roads which no other race on the face of The Realm know as well as they do. While famed for their knowledge of the Fauna and Flora of many regions there is none which they know better still than their home of the Old Forest.
Forbidden by their own laws from ever dwelling in the forests from which they first emerged, the Alkrhin have long taught fawn (children) of the natural dangers and treasures of their home forest. Using paintings of these Flora and Fauna on small thin sheets of softwood they kept their knowledge alive through the ages alongside renderings of characters from various tales and parables.
Typical of youths of any race, the young fawn would play with them, and various games were created to amuse young minds on long journeys. As the tribes crossed paths a common rule set was established though other versions are often still played. This game of their cards of yore became popular with their race in every corner of the horizons, regardless of age.
In their travels and dealings, the Alkrhin became a familiar caravan for many races as they traded exotic wares on their forever journeying. Among these interactions the cards of yore spread, and soon other races began adding their own regions and indigenous nature to the cards, and the game as it is known today evolved and grew.
For those of you interested in the reasoning behind Cards of Yore, be sure to check out [Realm Franchise]. The story portrayed above is merely a glimpse these cards of yore tell.
ABOUT US
Just a few Indies going at it (we obv know what we’re doing)
Otter Insanity Studios is a partner studio of Orode Productions headed by Ross McEwan, who started off as a Designer with Joey van Gangelen’s Orode Productions on Realm in Potentia, then under the name “Codename Reality”. When the decision was made to expand Realm in Potentia into a franchise to realize the full possibility of the lore, Otter Insanity Studios was set up to handle Cards of Yore without distracting the Realm in Potentia Team and vision. The two are accompanied by a variety of friends, contractors and associates who are always ready to be recruited for bits of art, audio, and other works.
OTTER INSANITY
Otterly insane about gaming!
Our Goal
To create modern games with an oldschool feel. Bring back the free demo! We aim to include as many accessibilty and localisation options as possible into our games, starting with Cards of Yore. A digital trading card game which will feature full visual impairment accessibilty on launch.
Who are we?
We are a small indie dev team based near Glasgow, Scotland. Each member of the team is an avid gamer at heart, so you know our games are built for gamers, by gamers.
Gaming for all!
We love games… we really do! They were such an important part of our childhoods. The laughing, the crying, the rage quits… some of our most treasured memories… how many of you can agree with that?
NOT ENOUGH WE SAY!
Many people are left out of the fun of games because some simply aren’t being made available enough. Now, this is not always possible…we however intend to pack our games with as much accessibility, freedom of platform, and localisation as we can manage without compromising the experience.
Gaming should be something open to everyone, and every platform should have every genre of game it can realistically support. That way, one day, everyone can fully enjoy gaming.
REALM FRANCHISE
the Realm Franchise encompasses all that is alive. For we do not share the sight that you behold. Not a single tree skins akin, none wilter as twins. Seasons manifested, times omni-present. the Realm is all that is, and none exists outwith it. This is the thought that all of us… have?
In reality those that do not know of a world outside of their own, will never have such thoughts. This is the foundation of the Realm. Maintain immersion, provide opportunities, and limit none as they breathe. As its primary goal of existence, Orode Productions has set out to deliver a world told by my tales, over many decades. Plethora of genres, thousands of views. And yet a single timeline that tells all tales.
For those of you that have read Cards of Yore’s lore, you may have found that its existence simply just is. It was created in an early time, and carried over for us to learn from. As such, Cards of Yore is considered our flagship title so that we can provide the stories of the world amidst the development of our franchise.
Current titles in development:
- Cards of Yore – A coy little game for all
- Realm in Potentia – Formerly hidden under Codename Reality

Details on what information we collect through what means is listed below. We take your privacy seriously and will not collect any information which can be used to track your personal information or identify you as a person, we will not share or publish this information in its raw form, only the extrapolated data, such as the percentages and averages we have worked out. We will never publish the data as itemised by user etc.
our stuff, and what it collects about you
Cards of Yore Advance Accessibility Demo, and its Server.
We will list what data is taken about you, the player, and stored for us to review and access by each part of the service.
Download page – Not a whistle, not a stitch, not a sausage. Whether using the download page on the website, or using the alternative Google Drive link, we store or recieve absolutely zero information about you. We do not feel it is our right to collect information about who is downloading a free and openly distributed product/game/service.
Installer/updater – The only peace of information we recieve from this process is the client side (your pc’s) updater telling our server which version it is on so that it knows wether or not to send the update. We do not store this data, nor is it viewed by anyone unless monitoring the server operations. This data is also impersonal and cannot be traced back to an individual user or device based on the information actual displayed.
The Server – Our server is made up of a few different parts. We have our queue server which is what your game initially connects to from the main menu, and when pressing play you are connected to our Game servers. This is a list of the information which the server is being set up to gather, and a brief explanation of why,
- Your mac address – This is a reference ID given by your device, it is used by us to keep a running count on the rough number of unique users who have accessed the game server, and how many times that address has appeared, we need this information for working out percentages as explained below
- Your country – We DO NOT store IP addresses, but we do grab the first 2 digits from it which will give us an indication of where in the world our player base was mainly situated. This is easily decieved with a VPN and many security suites will prevent us from getting it properly, if you are concerned about this, we encourage you to circumvent our efforts for your own peace of mind on this matter. We do take privacy very seriously.
- Your Game’s Stats – After every match we will store a report, this tells us things like how long the average turn was, how long the shortest turn was, how long the longest turn was, How many turns were in the game, did the game end in a defeat/victory, a player quit, or a timeout. This is to help us understand how people are getting on, are our time limits too harsh, or too open? This information is not stored along side your Mac Address.
- Ratings and feedback – The player will occassionally be presented with options to give us ratings or feedback, the answers given will be stored.
Information collected by this process about an individual;
All we will be collecting which we can determine as a single user is, the MAC address, the number of games played by that Mac address, the general country/region the connection comes from, the ratings given in feedback by that MAC address.

Biome
The biome card serves as the basis of your deck and has a significant impact upon it. The biome card changes your half of the game board to the region the card represents. Howling tundras, oceanic depths, blistering deserts, lush forests and more.
Biomes can be freezing, cold, mild, hot, and scorching in their temperature, as well as host aquatic, land or both creature kinds.
Resource Cards
Life, Nature, and Artisan Essence. These 3 elemental energies crystallise in the magic drenched atmosphere of the Realm. Essences of different kinds and in different volumes will be required for each card. Use your Resource and Flora cards wisely and escalate the field in your favor.
Fauna
The creatures of the Realm, Fauna are a fundamental component to a deck. With various abilities, stats and costs there’s a Fauna for every occasion. Utilise them to your best advantage as Fauna provide the key component to dealing direct damage!
Flora
The Flora of the Biome, these cards grow for several rounds and are then harvested, triggering any abilities. Unable to attack, flora do provide many benefits in their defensiveness and versatility! Defend them until fruition, and enjoy nature’s rewards.
Constructs
Buildings, gadgets and artifacts. The ingenuities of the Realm’s intelligent races know few limits. They are as varied in their applications as the whimsy of invention itself. From humble farmsteads and workshops, to dominating siege fortresses, constructs can seriously steer the tide in a battle.
Characters
Heroes, villains, adventurers… whatever they may be they are the mightiest among the denizens of the Realm, few and far between are the noteworthy members of the many races, as such these cards are rare and often very powerful.
Once you’ve found a way to obtain one, perhaps one of its toughest challenges is choosing whether to play or discard it as their usages are unique.
Platforms?
Computers
At full release the game will be available firstly to PC and Mac users, available initially via our website and the Epic Store, with release to Steam to follow, and other stores/markets to be considered over time.
Accessibility will be supported.
Mobile
iOS and Android will come alongside PC and Mac in the initial release. The experience on mobile will be the complete game, but tailored to take best advantage of the platforms strengths and weaknesses in terms of how the game is controlled and viewed.
|
Accessibility will be supported.
Console
Console release will be post-PC/Mobile release. We are planning to bring the game to Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. Controls and layouts will be tailored to each platform in keeping with their typical control schemes.
Accessibility will be supported.
VR
Either alongside or after Console, or a mix of the two across various VR platforms. A heavily tailored versioning of Cards of Yore will bring an immersive and unique perspective of the game to Virtual Reality.
Accessibility may not be supportable on all systems.
Virtual Reality
We have a VR design which is both awesome and a little ambitious, for this reason VR will likely be the last to receive a launch, but it will be worth it. We plan to make full use of the incredibly unique and immersive experience offered by VR.
Specifics on VR stores/devices are yet to be decided, but we firmly believe it is within our power to avoid being limited to a select few.
Accessibility support – Screenreaders
For the moment we are working primarily on consistently smooth and enjoyable functionality with NVDA, though we have turned our gaze towards JAWS and other screen readers, and will endeavour to support as many softwares as we can. Naturally, we will be focusing on the accessibility software which comes with the operating systems we are targeting also.
